After the initial shuffling of plates and utensils, the refilling of coffees and cocoas, and those first few blissful bites, Dean asks, "When Sam was at Stanford, he was happy, wasn't he?"
He and his brother, close as they are, don't talk about that absence. To Dean, those years are just a void. After spending so much of his life spent looking out for Sam, not having him in his charge was the first real loss he felt since his mother, so while he suspects Sam enjoyed that time away as a "civilian", Dean just as often pretends it never happened.
