Now, that does seem more in line with the Sam he knows. His brother isn't clumsy per se, but just too large in general for the world around him. And he's not a known lady's man. Dean chuckles at the mental image. Good thing Jessica was such a good sport.

Before the mood can become somber at the memories of Haley's sister, the waitress appears with their sugar-laden breakfast. After the initial shuffling of plates and utensils, the refilling of coffees and cocoas, and those first few blissful bites, Dean asks, "When Sam was at Stanford, he was happy, wasn't he?"

He and his brother, close as they are, don't talk about that absence. To Dean, those years are just a void. After spending so much of his life spent looking out for Sam, not having him in his charge was the first real loss he felt since his mother, so while he suspects Sam enjoyed that time away as a "civilian", Dean just as often pretends it never happened.
